King Lear A Story of Madness and Blindness
King Lear is considered one of Shakespeare’s best tragedies. ... Two of the major tendencies are madness and blindness.
Shakespeare opens the play with a display of madness which shows the early steps of King Lear’s journey into madness. Demonstrating early signs of dementia , Lear seeks to begin early retirement by dividing his kingdom between his three daughters. ... King Lear graciously accepts the praise and platitude of the elder daughters, Regan and Goneril and then gives them their portion. ... Lear angrily takes her land then sends her to France through marriage to the King of France. In this scene, King Lear takes great strides towards a full storm of madness.
Later, Shakespeare presents madness as a tool to forge strength and build character in Edgar, son of Gloucester. ... He is being prepared for the role of king. Strangely enough, Edgar’s madness can be contrasted to the madness of Lear’s jester, the Fool.
Through the Fool, Lear’s jester, Shakespeare demonstrates that madness may reveal some truths. He use the Fool to show truths of the king and the court to the audience.
