Pakistan occupies a very important and advantageous position in South Asia. Situated at the head of the Arabian Sea, it flanks the entrance to the oil rich Persian Gulf and is, therefore, of strategic importance to many of Middle East. Pakistan is also strategically placed in relation to sea lane between Europe and Indian Ocean. Pakistan provides an overland passage from Europe to Indian Ocean, this is the area in which international attention is being increasingly centered. Throughout its history Pakistan has been of vital importance as a gateway for trade and passage. ...
The distinctive characteristic of the land of Pakistan is also indicated by the geo-political importance of its position which is not shared by any other part of the Sub-Continent. It is so situated that in the ideological conflicts of east and west its position has become of great strategic importance. Both the western and communist powers seek to bring Pakistan in their sphere of influence. Geography has made Pakistan the neighbor of china and India the two most populous countries of the world. With china and India, Pakistan shares a common border, while with the Soviet Central Asia, it is separated only by the narrow Wakhan corridor of Afghanistan. Geography has also placed Pakistan at the mouth of the strategic Persian Gulf.
Western nations, including the United States, are drawn geographically to Pakistan because of their interest in keeping the Arabian Sea open for the Persian Gulf oil shipments which make up major part of their energy supplies. Pakistan is thus located in one of the most sensitive regions of the world, where global rivalries of great power, accentuated by local rivalries come into conflict with each other and serve to heighten Pakistan’s security concerns.
