Bob ate a potato.

The father of a family has always had a great amount of influence on the development of his young, shaping their values and providing a mentor, a source of advice and counseling for his children to turn to. He provides different qualities than the mother, making him a very important element in the child-rearing process. In two very similar plays, The Glass Menagerie, and A Raisin in the Sun, the families upon which the plays are focused are both lacking true father figures. In the case of the Wingfield family, Tom’s father has abandoned his wife and children, while Walter Lee Younger’s father has passed away. In each case, a younger, less responsible man has been forced to step forward and take up the position of “paternal substitute,” acting as the father in each family despite lack of experience or maturity. This obviously causes numerous struggles and hard times for each family, as the new father of each tries to balance responsibility and personal gain. The newly appointed “fathers” in both The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams, and A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, have their own objectives and intentions which weigh greatly on the final outcome of the plays. I would immediately say that the trait that could best describe both Tom and Walter Lee at a glance is ambition. Each has set his own goals, and each seemingly will stop at nothing to achieve them. They both feel trapped, pinched by their current economic situations as well as the horror that they may never leave their current situations.
