Germany: The Cold-War Battlefield
When asked to analyze a Western European nation’s development from the end of the Cold-War period to the present, there was no better country to consider than Germany. Germany was the symbolic battlefield on which the Cold-War was fought through the 1980s. The United States held the western half of Germany and imposed western democratic theology on those inhabitants there. ... Before 1990 though, Germany was composed of two wholly separate territories. ... West Germany began to provide loans and credits to East Germany in return for eased travel restrictions and other concessions” (The World Book, 171).
In Eastern Germany just prior to the 1990s, there was much interest in a more democratic governmental system which governed a unified Germany. ...
One would think that only good could come from the rapid unification of the German people, but upon further analysis, it becomes apparent that in no way was East Germany ready for a union of economies. The Western economy had naturally evolved throughout the post-war period with the aid of the Marshall Plan, funded by the United States, to help the reconstruction process. ... When Germany finally was unified in July of 1990, the extremely heavy weight, that was the East German economy, was suddenly heaved upon the backs of the West German market.
“The economic conditions of East Germany were much worse than anticipated. ... Unemployment in Germany, after the reunification process, had increased. “The increase was due to a number of problems, including industrial restructuring in former East Germany, declines in export orders brought about by recession in other countries, and monetary policies designed to curb inflation” (FRG, 2003). ... It is from here that Helmut Kohl will play a very big role in the global development of Germany.
