Still I Rise is one of Maya Angelous most famous poems; it describes the way in which black people have undergone major oppression in America (particularly the south) for centuries. ... Angelou states through her poetry there is confidence and realness of being black and that to the black oppressed whites are Uncertain and insecure. ... In her first biography she says as a child she never thought of white people as being real, and that they were “too white and see-throughy”. ... Whitefolks couldn’t be people because their feet were too small, their skin too white and see-throughy”
This perception as white people as not real insinuates they lack authenticity and is something that can be seen in Still I Rise. ... Maya then uses the striking image of dust rising from her trodden self. “But still, like dust, I’ll rise”. ...
In Still I Rise Maya Angelou is saying that no matter what is inflicted upon her, she has an everlasting strength to conquer it. I feel Angelou is referring to herself as “I” talking to the white oppressor as “you”. ... She asks does it upset her oppressors that she appears rich:
“I walk like I’ve got oil wells pumping in my living room”
Here Angelou is saying she is rich in spirit.
