How Stereotypes Affect Latinos
What reasons are there to stereotype Latinos? Why in America stereotypes are about Latinos, such as the Latino-as-illegal immigrant, Latino-as-drug abuser, the Latino as hot-headed and prone-to-violence macho male? I want to know why some common stereotypes of Latinos that have been perpetuated in the media? While it is important to remember that there are many differences among various Latin American peoples, many of these stereotypes have been used to characterize all Latinos as bad, lazy, and people without education. It is also important to keep in mind that the following characteristics are stereotypes not because they show Latinos as gang member they are all equal. The results in the stereotype damage all the Latinos in America. Latinos portrayed negative in a manner, as a result of stereotypes. In the essay about “What Causes Latinos Stereotypes in the United States” written by a college student Edgar Lobaton. He presents us how the Latinos are judged by the stereotypes. The Latinos get a bad reputation about how they are viewed in America. When American people see this stereotypes they think that all Latinos are the same. Lobaton says that “he decides to find out how persuasive these stereotypes are and to analyze what causes them“. To determine the persuasiveness of stereotypes Lobaton distributed a questionnaire to twenty-five people in his residence. ... These stereotypes shows Latinos as lazy and unmotivated. This images dos not fit Latinos. In the movie Blood in Blood Out it shows Latinos as working as valets’ people. ... In the stereotypes they show Latinos as lazy and unmotivated but this is not true, all the Latinos who decide to be here, want to be here because they want a better life. In Lobaton’s essay he makes me think about how these stereotypes damage the reputation of Latinos in America. I think that the cause of these stereotypes is because of the way news is reported. In the news seen on television and in the newspaper, they never show the good, but they highlight the things’ about the Latinos.
