Human Development

The process by which humans learn a behavior or acquire new skills has long been of interest to psychological, sociological, and behavioral researchers. Learning is defined as any permanent change in behavior due to experience. Most psychologists discuss three types of learning techniques: classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and observational learning. Classical conditioning, developed by Ivan Pavlov, is a form of learning whereby a stimulus is paired with a desired response through a series of trials (Grusec, 1992). Operant conditioning developed by Skinner, deals with trying to increase a desired behavior, or decrease an undesired behavior through reinforcement (Grusec, 1992). While these two theories are important in the understanding of how learning occurs, observational learning has a fundamental impact on the way a child acquires information. In the following paragraphs, I will describe the ideas behind observational learning as well as how this theory coincides with child development. Observational learning states that children learn a behavior through the imitation and modeling of a role model.
