These “magic mushrooms” are becoming more and more widely and frequently used among American citizens who are mostly adolescents. The substance in the mushroom that causes the hallucinogenic affects is called psilocybin. There are three different genera of mushrooms, which contain the drug, known as Psilocyba, Panaelous, and Cononcybe (Schwartz). They are ussually small brown or tan mushrooms, which are easily mistakable for non-psychedelic, inedible, or poisonous mushrooms. ... One distinguishable feature of most psilocybin containing mushrooms is that they bruise blue when they are handled (Erowid). These mushrooms have been being used for centuries. ... In the United States, hallucinogenic mushrooms grow naturally on cow manure mostly in the northwest and southeast. ... It is considered a hallucinogenic drug that is in the same family as mescaline, peyote, and about twenty other substances (Cannizaro).
