Church History When Jesus was born the Romans were in charge. Palestine was a melting pot for different types of people and different types of loyalties. Jews represented about half of the population. The Jews of Jesus times despised living under Roman rule, and were waiting for the day they would be liberated. Out of their dislike for the Roman there arose several different factions of Jews. The different factions were the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Zealots, and the Essenes most Jews fell into one of these categories. Jesus joined a new movement in the wilderness, where his cousin John leading. Jesus began by being baptized there. Jesus then chose to begin his ministry in Galilee. Jesus preached his message by going from city to city and preaching in the evening in the synagogues. Most villages didn’t always have a resident priest so they welcomed wandering teachers. Jesus also did many miracles while traveling, telling those he healed to keep it a secret. Most people he healed did not keep it a secret so his popularity spread. With his newfound popularity he also aroused controversy. The Pharisees did not like to see someone being listened to that had never studied the Scriptures. Jesus liked the challenge of the Pharisees because this way he could show them what they were doing wrong. During this time Jesus called his twelve disciples.
