... In Australia, the greatest force in democratic ideals is the Australian Labor Party and the major force behind the liberalist view is the Liberal Party (Tate, 2003). The above definition of democracy and liberalism does not do them justice in contemporary politics. ... Democracy originated in ancient Greece and literally translates to rule by the people. ... Today of course the word “democracy” is the catch cry of the so called free world and prides itself on everyone having a say in government by the way of the election process (Heywood p68). ... There is an obvious conflict between democratic and liberalist ideologies. Conflicts exist in all liberal democracies of which Australia is one. ... Clearly, the Labor party would prefer to supply the drug to anyone that requires it but cannot afford to pay for it at the possible detriment to the economy and the Liberal party would prefer that people work to achieve enough success in order to pay for the drug themselves. The differences that exist between Liberalism and Democracy put them at odds with each other and being that they are both liberal democratic parties, it puts them at odds with themselves. ... With democracy being focused on the majority and liberalism being focused on the individual and both major parties being liberal democratic parties, conflicts such as the 1997-98 wharfies are inevitable.
