Female Infanticide

Female infanticide is the practice of killing newborn female babies on the basis of their gender. Infanticide, whether gender biased or not, was the most universal solution to population control across all cultures in history. ... The Cheyenne and other Northern Plain Indians of North America practiced infanticide for these reasons. In societies such as hunter-gather societies, where the division of labor was sex-based, gender-biased infanticide was practiced to maintain an optimum gender-ratio for the society, with female infants obviously being killed more prominently. Female infanticide also occurs in strong patriarchal cultures where a high value is placed on males and where females are considered an economic burden. Today, infanticide is practiced as a result of a culture’s unique social view and acceptable social conduct - not for the sheer satisfaction of killing females.
