Euripides’ Bacchae In the beginning of the play, Dionysus returns to Thebes to defend his dead mother’s pride, and punish her sisters. Dionysus had with him some followers, and he want to change Thebes’s religion into a new one. He had to prove to the people of Thebes and especially to his mother’s family that he was a god, and had to that Zeus was his father.
