How did the moon form? The moon formed at least 4 billion years ago. There are several theories on how the moon became to be. Some theories state that the moon broke off from the moon or that the moon came out of the earth’s crust. Another says that the gravitational field of the earth pulled in the moon like a predator catching its prey. Theories also state that the earth crashed into the moon or it happened with condensation of the earth and moon. The last one says that a something approximately the size of mars struck the earth causing an ejection of large amounts of matter to come out.
