The Rag and Bone Shop

The novel by Robert Cormier, titled The Rag and Bone Shop, goes into great detail of an interrogation of a 12-year-old boy, who’s extremely shy and seriously lacks self-esteem. He is accused of murdering his 7-year-old neighbor and is mentally distraught when he cannot answer the detective’s questions. Because of his inability to meet society’s high standards, Jason begins to break down mentally. The main theme of the novel is “When a human is pushed too far to meet society’s standards, the length to which they will go to accomplish their desire is spontaneous and chaotic without limits.” The interrogation process, as well as the thoughts and motivation of both Jason and Trent, the interrogator, are the heart of this dark novel. The police officers in Jason’s small suburban town are at their wit’s end when there is no evidence in the brutal murder of Alicia, a 7-year-old. Because Jason was the last to see her alive, a detective goes out on a limb and his “gut instinct” and believes that Jason was the murderer. Since there is no evidence, the only way to get a conviction is a confession. The Senator of the state puts a lot of pressure on the case because his grandson was part of Alicia’s class, and would like to put the town at ease.
