Our unforgotten war On the anniversary of the Korean War armistice on July 27, I asked a young friend of mine if he would guess how many people were killed in the three-year conflict. ... And yet, its troubling to see young Koreans like my friend, blinded by prosperity and democracy, being so hazy - even noncommittal - about the meaning of the war that imposed so much sacrifice on the young republic, which was still emerging from decades of colonial rule. After all, this war is not over yet; the North and South are still technically at war; it hasnt officially terminated with a peace treaty. ... So the war that killed over two million North and South Koreans, at least a good seven percent of the population, not only remains unfinished, the totalitarian regime that provoked it is still there, largely unrepentant. ... His very existence serves as a reminder that the Korean Peninsula could go up in the flames of war again.
