After the Normans’ conquest of England in 1066 BC English was in a long/er period the language of common people, while French was spoken at Court and by the upper classes. The two languages existed side by side nearly three hundred years and modern English is a compound/blend where approx. half of the words come from Anglo-Saxon or Scandinavian and the other half from French or Roman.
