Medieval Drama With the destruction of the Roman Empire, the church took steps to make sure that all signs of official theatrical life disappeared. Many years later, churches began to bring it back. Small performances were shown during the services. These plays were designed to educate people about life. The priests would act out these little skits every week, but surely it could be better than this. Sure this was teaching the people at the church, but what about the others? What about the people who didn’t go to church? These people couldn’t’ read or write either. The church then decided to reintroduce theatre to the community. And so, the plays were brought to the streets. The actors piled their prop and costumes onto special wagons, which folded out producing a stage. These were called pageant wagons. The pageant wagons were about 15 feet tall and often the same wide. They had six wheels and little stepladders down either side for the actors to climb up and down. The wagons were great because they could be taken anywhere, and they would instantly have a stage to perform on. The plays performed in the pageant wagon were really dramatic, and crowds loved them because they could get involved. The plays asked for the audiences to yell out and contribute to the performances.
