“El Norte” and “Joy Luck Club” are both films about immigrants struggle to get to the United States (US) and to survive there, whether individually or with family. The purpose of this essay is to analyze both films placing emphasis on the issues of race, ethnicity, gender, and language, evaluating these issues influence (good or bad) on the characters’ experiences in each film. ... Race In the film “El Norte”, the central characters, Enrique and Rosita, were a brother and sister from Guatemala. ... In the film “Joy Luck Club”, the four central characters, Suyan Woo, Lindo, Ying Ying, and An-Mei, were Chinese. ... On their journey to America, Enrique and Rosita (from the film “El Norte”) were ridiculed because they were of an indigenous race. ...
