Drama Comparison – "My mother said I never should” The play “My mother said I never should” is a feminist play and was written by Charlotte Keatley in 1985. In this essay I will compare it to other feminist plays from the same era. I played the part of Jackie when my drama group performed different scenes from the play. ... By being categorised as a ‘feminist play’, I believe this to be an important connection as it brings to light the way in which women in society behave and we are shown how women behaved in 1920 right through to the late 1980’s. I think the play is symbolic in the way it has undertones and meanings which develop as the play evolves. ... I think by making all the male characters talked about but never seen, Keatley creates a curiously lopsided impression of these men. I also think that by keeping the men offstage Keatley promotes feminism in an effective yet different way to what we think it is. ... By creating the mother-daughter relationships between all the characters, Keatley uses situations such as a broken marriage, family guilt, the single parent and faithless husbands to see how mother- daughter relationships cope under such strain and pressure. ... The play is in many ways similar to “My mother said I never should” however it contradicts it by the fact that the women in “Top Girls” are not as intimidated by men as the women in “My mother said I never should”.
