The Art and Science of Teaching In order to be able to write this paper I did a lot of research on teaching as an art and a science. Throughout this class we have covered the various aspects in the field of teaching. Teaching encompasses a great many things. To begin, I will define art and science. There are a variety of definitions for the word ART; the one I found most fitting to our subject was the following: A trade or craft and the methods employed in it. ... Science comprises many things; the best definition for our purposes is the following: A systematic activity requiring system and method. ... In reviewing all of the assignments we have had in this class (reading, lectures, discussion questions, and papers) I discovered the many different aspects of teaching. The art and science of teaching can also be described as pedagogy. Pedagogy meaning: The art, profession or science of teaching. ... According to one site, “In addition to focusing on specific teaching methods, pedagogy includes the planning and goal setting teachers do, the way they organize the classroom, and the ongoing decisions they make as a result of what happens in the classroom. ... As teachers, we must have a disposition that leads to teaching. ... A good teacher must pragmatically combine both the artistic and the scientific sides of teaching. ... There can be teachers that only use the scientific side of teaching, as there are those that only use the artistic side. It seems, from my varied research, that students learn best when teachers balance both aspects in their teaching styles. According to our textbook, “The Art and Science of Teaching” (Parkay, 2001, pg. 85), in section one, it is noted that, “Effective teachers use a repertoire of teaching models and assessment strategies; depending upon their situations and the goals and objectives they wish to attain.
