1)- I think that Buckmans Lab has made these decisions on each of the six key elements of organizational design: Work specialization: Buckman did not want his employees to feel isolated and uninformed about what was happening in different parts of the company and that’s why he united the company’s knowledge instead of isolating it into separate jobs (Low work specialization). Departmentalization: I think that Buckman’s idea on departmentalization was to create a knowledge department and a huge cross-functional team for knowledge that involves in all of the employees exchanging knowledge. This results in the employees constantly working together and expanding their knowledge, and delivering to customers. This allows Buckmans Lab to stay connected, share understandings and function anywhere, at anytime. Chain of command: Beckman’s idea was to empower all employees to access information, in a matter of seconds, which used to be available only to the top managers. This allows all the company employees (anywhere in the world), to communicate with anyone else without going through formal channels (chain of command). By making his employees directly involved, he maximizes the company’s level of knowledge and gives each employee responsibilities that may have been previously reserved for managers. This way the company can perform anywhere and anytime no matter what. Span of control: Buckman’s idea in span of control is very obvious as he made it clear in the statement on-line “ Those of you who have something intelligent to say now have a forum in which to say it.
