Herman Hesse’s novel Demian walks us through the hallway of the early years of character Emil Sinclair’s life. ... Max Demian was the next person to change Sinclair’s life, he threw Sinclair totally off the track his dad wanted him to follow by teaching him to look at the world in a whole new way. When the class was discussing the bible Demian tells Sinclair that “…this is one of the very places that reveals the poverty of this religion most distinctly. ... But now Demian has lead Sinclair through a new door and taught him to examine the bible more carefully because things aren’t always as they seem. Demian explains to Sinclair that the bible only shows you the good while hiding the evil, everything in the bible is either good or evil. According to Demian this is false and things are not either good or bad but they can be both. ... Sinclair starts to see what Demian is talking about and looks at his religion in a whole new way. Religion no longer has the same meaning to Sinclair because of what Demian has told him. Even though Sinclair agreed with Demian’s interpretation of the bible he could not help “accusing him of having caused the impoverishment of my life that held me in its sway like a foul disease.
