problem of evil

What is the Problem of evil? ... By Nikhil Chauhan The existence of god has been thoroughly criticised by philosophers for centuries due to the problem of evil. ... The problem of evil arises when people believe that god is omni-benevolent (all loving), omnipotent (all powerful) and omniscient (all knowing), and evil still exists. The argument for the problem of evil is; 1) Evil exists; 2) If god is omniscient then s/he can foresee any evil before it happens; 3) If god is omni-benevolent the s/he will wish to prevent any evil that s/he foresees; 4) If god is omnipotent then s/he will be able to prevent any evil that s/he wishes to; 5) God is omniscient, omni-benevolent and omnipotent. With the conclusion being; Evil both exists (from 1) and cannot exist (from 2-5) This argument is valid and therefore if we can validly show that a set of statements is inconsistent, then removing one of the statements validly follows from the rest of the statements taken as premises. ... 1) If there is an omniscient, omni-benevolent, omnipotent god, then there could be no evil.
