Sacrafice, Where are you going, where have you been??

Have you ever done sacrificed yourself in order to save someone else? In the story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates, the plot shows how Connie sacrifices herself to save her family. Oates utilizes the development of characters, setting, and symbols to portray the argument. In this story, characters are represented in several diverse ways. The main character, Connie, is depicted as an innocent, beautiful fifteen year old girl. Only when the story continues does the reader begin to realize this is not true. In the line, “She wore a pull over jersey blouse that looked one way when she was at home and another when she was away from home” (407), the author shows Connie’s ability to have people perceive her in different ways. This helps strengthen the argument because it displays how Connie cares what her parents think of her. Connie’s mother is presented in a unique fashion. Most mothers tell their daughters how beautiful they are to help improve their self-confidence, yet Connie’s mother says “Stop gawking yourself, who are you? You think you’re so pretty” (406). This shows Connie’s mothers jealously towards her daughter because the mother is no longer a beautiful girl; she is a grown woman.
