The danger for allowing such a fee to stand is where is all this going to end? Where is the line drawn on what should or can be assessed an access fee, and what cannot? Not too long after the Hanauma fee began, proposed fees popped up everywhere; fireworks, beach access, camping, etc. You name it, it probably has been proposed. But where do we draw the line of what can be fee’ed, and what cannot. In this year’s legislative session, there was talk of even charging $55 dollars for tour operators to bring tourists into the parking lot of the bay, each time they go. Living in Hawaii, the beach is a fundamental right that each resident and nonresident alike should be able to go to, without taking a financial hit.
