As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner is a modernist text that breaks away from the traditional values, preoccupations and forms of realism. ... Modernism in itself is a reassessment of the values that had previously been so important in the past. ... To modernists, these traditional values no longer mattered, and everything that had once had meaning and was whole was now incoherent and fragmented. Overall, Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying and other modernist works were ultimately a reflection of the loss, disillusionment and despair carried over from a changing world in which the values and ideals of realism were no longer relevant.
