Suicide is a major issue for Australia that continues to gain importance and has no clear resolution. In Australia, suicide is the third most common cause of death, after cancer and heart disease. Suicide is the leading external cause of death for men, while it is third for women. More people in Australia die from suicide than road traffic accidents. ... However, from the statistics that labels suicide as a larger threat to Australian people than car accidents, it could be asserted that the government should be investing more money into strategies of suicide prevention and awareness nationwide. Suicide has been simply defined as the deliberate act of taking one’s life. ... For every completed suicide there is over 30 attempts, therefore there are over 210 people a day attempting suicide. ... For every completed male suicide there are five attempts. For every completed female suicide there are 35 attempts. This statistical information displays the seriousness not only of the issue of suicide, but of the issue of attempted suicide and self-harm, particularly by females.
