The data protection act requires everyone who processes personal data to register this fact with the Data Register. They also have to register the purpose for which they hold the data. The act says that data should not be used in a way incompatible with the declared purposes for which it is held, or disclosed in such a way that it will be used in an incompatible way. Any individual may request a data holder to provide a copy of all information held about him/her and may challenge the accuracy of the information.
