INFORMATION SYSTEMS QUALITY
INTRODUCTION
The aim of this essay is to compare and contrast the International Organisation for Standardisation, (ISO) 9000 family and the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) in their ability to produce high quality information systems,
‘ Quality System is the expression used internationally to describe a process which ensures and demonstrates the quality of the products and services it produces’ J, Sanders 1994. ...
Both documents maintain that their particular approach should be used when developing quality information systems. ISO states that they provide general requirements, which establish essentials when producing quality systems. CMM makes similar claims that the process areas comprise of basic practices, which are significant when implementing a quality system-engineering process. ... ISO 9000 on the other hand identifies general features for a quality management programme. ... To construct a quality system you firstly need to understand what is meant by the term ‘Quality’. The International Standard Quality Vocabulary (ISO 8402-1986) defines quality as;
‘The totality of features and characteristics of a product or service that bear on its ability to meet stated or implied needs’.
The English dictionary defines ‘Quality’ as “ a degree of excellence”
ISO emphasises on its customer/supplier relationship and requires that all policies held within the ISO 9000 family must be distinctive providing full documentation that can be easily accessed and interpreted.
