It had taken me twenty-five years to reach the point where I could talk openly about Manzanar and the more I talked, the clearer it became that any book we wrote would have to include a great deal more than day-to-day life inside the compound. ... I am not a religious person, but I am sure that if I was at Manzanar, I would find comfort and warmth in talking to God, even if he does not exist. ... Everyone’s life is now Manzanar.
