His father was Hans Luther, a copper miner, and his mother, Margarethe Luther wanted Martin to become a lawyer but Martin was not going to do that because one day he was caught in a bad thunder storm and asked God to let him live through it and if he did Luther would devote his life to the word of God. Luther survived the storm and kept his word and became a monk.
