Capitalism

Robert Nozick was a philosophical defender of “Libertarianism”. He believed that we should live in a society where human beings must be free to pursue their own conception of what they think is the good. He believes that human beings should be free to pursue this good without interference from others (mainly the government or some superior force). Nozick also thinks that we need to maximize this personal freedom within the context of a society, where each person is pursuing his or her own conception of the good. With this freedom in effect however, there should be certain rights or limiting factors that give structure to such a society of free individuals. It was not clear to me what Nozick’s concept of freedom entailed, but I’m going to take it to mean anything one wants to do, so long as it is accordance to the laws and duties of a given society. Having said this, I have reservations about Nozick’s perspective and thoughts on why I think this ‘freedom’ is not all it is cut out to be. There are some persons in society who have more resources than, and who are wealthier than others. With this in mind, people will use their power or resources to get what that want. They will use this freedom to violate or take advantage of others to achieve their goals. So even though in Nozick’s capitalist society all will be given the freedom to pursue his or her own good, some persons will have more resources to pursue such and others won’t, and will suffer as a result.
