The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams Plot and Setting: The play was a memory play, told by Tom. He was remembering a point in his life, sometime in the 1930’s, when he lived with his mother Amanda and his slightly disabled sister, Laura. They lived in a small apartment with a fire escape used as a porch that Tom would often have his cigarettes on. The play centered around Laura’s glass collection, or as Amanda called it her ‘glass menagerie.’ The glass seemed to represent many things in the play, from Laura’s fragile ways being compared to the glass, to her father, to even just the plain beauty and simplicity of it. Laura and Tom’s father left when they were little, and everyone seemed to be a little bitter about it. It was obvious that Tom wanted to do the same, and in the end, that is what he did. Main Characters: The main characters in the play were: Amanda Wingfield, the mother, who was very set on finding her daughter a husband.
