I think the DVD commentaries have been the most help in fully understanding David Fincher as a director, in them he tells you exactly why he wanted to do every camera shot and movement in the film, and why there seems to be a pattern in his films. ... However, most of the people talking about and analysing Fincher and his films on the Internet are fans like myself; his cult status on the Internet is huge. ... Fincher, not actually believing himself to be an auteur, makes it hard to find out why he always includes certain idioms into his work, but I think it is clear that he likes to include these shadowy metropolitan images in his films and decaying ideas of what most call home to shock the audience and upset the comforts of life. Presentation Script: It is all too easy for critics to write David Fincher off as a youthful inexperienced ‘entertaining’ one-dimensional director. ... The reason that I chose to research the post modernistic elements of David Fincher’s style of directing is for many reasons: one is that I enjoy his films, another is that he has achieved such an extensive fan base from the just few films he has made. ... ’ I do not mean to give the impression however that the only reason to like these films is if you are slightly twisted, because the themes of David Fincher’s are important and, especially in Fight Club, thought provoking. Whilst listening to David Fincher on the DVD commentaries (items 1, 2 and 3) I found that in his movies he usually looks to see what he could get away with in his films, and what the producers would allow. As he said in his interview with the empire (item 16) ‘everybody hated Alien’ (Alien 3 David Fincher’s first big Hollywood film) ‘but nobody hated it more than I did’. ... On the commentary on Se7en (item 2) Fincher and Pitt said that ‘the producers wanted him to holster his weapon’ and change this aspect of the end of the film but they fought the producers and won. ... Fincher does tend to use similar stars and often his friends in minor parts.
