A Critique of Garrett Hardin’s Essay Among the pressing issues in the world today is the ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor. ... In Garrett Hardin’s essay, “Living in a Lifeboat”, he brings up many points, some of which are not very clear, but he does believe that stable nations should be giving wisdom to developing countries instead of food aid, and that food aid will only lead to an increased population without the knowledge to produce more food. ... Hardin is correct when he says developing countries need the knowledge to sustain food production, but wrong by saying that we should not send countries food aid, the path to developing poor countries lies somewhere in the middle. Hardin looks at many aspects of society in this essay, two important points he critiques are that of rights vs. ... Hardin says spreading knowledge is the key, and not giving food aid, but this argument is definitely incomplete. ... Hardin has a good point is stating that we, as a race, assert our rights while ignoring the responsibilities that come with those rights. ...
