Liberalism

Liberalism is one of three major frameworks used to comprehend the subject of international politics in society today. There is no particular date that can be set as to when Liberalism actually came about. Most perspectives of Liberalism have been taken from great thinkers throughout the last couple of centuries, which include economists Adam Smith and David Ricardo; writers John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Thomas Hobbes. Fundamentally, any liberalism attitude, movement, or philosophy has as its most basic concern the development of personal freedom and social progress. However, to fully understand the complex ideas of Liberalism, one must analyze two distinct features of this political framework, those being, the liberal perspective upon the concept of a human, as well as, Liberalism’s take upon the economy and the market.
Although the ideas of Liberalism have been varied throughout its existence, the central perspective upon the human has not been altered. At its core, Liberalism takes the human being as a free spirit, who is self-interested, full of wants and needs, and somewhat calculating. ... ’ (Stanford, 2000)
Since most of the perspectives of Liberalism connect the individual and the market, it is no surprise that this issue must be discussed next.
