Family Values and Gender Roles Family values and gender roles have gone through changes over time and differ from family to family. Thru the media one can accumulate general characteristics of gender roles and family values of Americans. The basis of family values and gender roles have been established at an early time and passed on through out the generations. In a 1790 etching, Keep within Compass gives a good example of how family values and gender roles are a restricting force on women. Family values are “positive beliefs and assumptions” (“Gender and Family Values” 213) that a family holds to be right, that are passed down thru the generations. When they are passed and instilled into children, family values helps shape their beliefs and who they are later in life. ... Family values will always be apart of our lives.
