Treatments For Cerebral Palsy:
The Effects of Botulinum Injections
The injection of botulinum toxin has become a widespread treatment for cerebral palsy patients. ... Two studies documented the results of the botulinum injection in the leg muscles, while another study followed the affects of the injection on the arm muscles. The studies found the injections to improve functional movement in the knee, arm, and wrist. Although there is no medical cure for cerebral palsy, the injection of botulinum toxin may prove to decrease spastic muscle movement, as well as increase functional mobility.
According to Neville (1994), “cerebral palsy is a motor disorder arising from static brain abnormalities that may result from early embryological defects or damage in utero or early extrauterine life.” Persons afflicted with cerebral palsy often suffer cognitive, psychiatric, sensory, and seizure disorders, as well as a wide range of motor impairment. ... ” Presently, there is no documented cure for cerebral palsy, however, many treatments, which are said to improve motor function and deformities exist (Freeman, 2000).
One such treatment for cerebral palsy is the injection of the botulinum toxin.
