Lab Report

SNC 2D Lab Activity Rate of Reaction Study: Concentration Purpose To study the effect of changing the concentration of the material on the rate of reaction of magnesium and hydrochloric acid. Hypothesis It was believed that by changing the concentration of hydrochloric acid when mixed with magnesium the rate of reaction would increase. This was anticipated because by changing the concentration, it would increase the amount of hydrochloric acid the magnesium could react with, therefore increasing the number of collisions, and the rate of reaction. Materials - safety goggles - 12 magnesium pieces (each 10 by 2mm) - 10mL graduated cylinder - 12 test tubes - test-tube rack(s) - hydrochloric acid solution (30mL of 6% HCl) - hydrochloric acid solution (30mL of 12% HCl) - hydrochloric acid solution (30mL of 18% HCl) - hydrochloric acid solution (30mL of 24% HCl) - watch or timer - dropper Procedure 1. After putting on your safety goggles, transfer 10mL of the 6% hydrochloric acid into one test tube.
