Digital Media

Introduction Digital media is the use of digital audio or video content delivered over the Internet or portable information devices. This paper will review how the world of media including music and movies, will embrace the emerging global digital technology. ... Media and entertainment companies are aggressively expanding their Internet usage both as an advertising channel and as a new revenue stream. The enormous growth of bandwidth that connects us all has enabled the rapid movement of media to increase its use of digital formats. In order for the media to realize the full potential of digital technology, they need to be able to efficiently distribute digital content securely in any media and to any place. Abstract The term "digital" refers to any technology that breaks information down into tiny parts, representing each part as a series of zeroes and ones. Information in a digital format can be transmitted much more quickly and cheaply, copied much more accurately, and manipulated much more easily than analog data. Because digital images can be compressed, the amount of digital data that can be sent over a particular bandwidth greatly exceeds the amount of analog data that can be sent over the same bandwidth. Although digital technology has been around for many years now, in the form of CDs and DVDs, a current revolution is extending digital applications to more areas. Discussion Currently, there are no clear success stories for a business model based solely on digital media. Some companies show revenue from digital media services, but none have reached profitability on digital media alone. The primary problem for any company using digital media is that revenues have not match the expenses incurred. Digital media technology may work, but the use of the technology has been greatly misjudged, for example the merger of Vivendi and Universal.
