Deserts There are five principal regions of natural desert on the earth. The Afro-Asian desert is the largest region. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to China covering the African Sahara, the Arabian, Iranian, Touranian deserts of the Middle East and central Asia, the Thar desert in Pakistan and India, and the Takla Makan and Gobi deserts of China and Mongolia. North American desert covering much of southern USA and northern Mexico. It also includes further south, the Atacama desert, a thin arid strip on the coastal side of the Andes. The Australian desert region covers a large area of the world’s largest island. The Patagonian desert includes much of the Argentina east of the Andes. The fifth desert region is the Namib and Kalahari desert in Africa, which includes a large area in the southwest. The common climatic conditions of desert include irregular rainfall of less than 250 mm (20 in) per year, very high evaporation rate often 20 times the annual precipitation, low relative humidity and little cloud cover. Temperature varies to a great extent, tropical deserts have diurnal temperature range and very high daytime temperatures (58º C has been recorded in Libya) whereas mid – latitudes deserts have large range and lower temperatures such as the Mongolian Desert where the mean temperature remains below freezing point for most part of the year. ...
