Manufactured Crisis in Public Education
... Yet, in my professional life I have pretty blindly accepted decisions related to education as being based on wisdom, practice, and research. ... The first 21 years of my career were in the public schools system with the last 12 in the parochial system. ... Reading The Manufactured Crisis by Berliner and Biddle, unfortunately, reinforces this cynicism all too strongly. The authors have gathered a large amount of evidence that partisan political and religious-right leaders have made a conscious effort to discredit the public schools. The media, with it’s quest for sensationalism and “gottcha” mentality have seriously added to the crisis by uncritically over-reporting every work and charge.
