Thesis: Through Humbert Humbert’s narrative perspective, the American culture is criticized, his desire for Lolita is somewhat justified, and the corroding effects of human desire are revealed. Because Humbert Humbert narrates Lolita from the from the view of a cultural outsider, he comes up against America in its post-war vulgarity. ... Humbert represents Old Europe and Lolita is Young America. This contradiction inevitably causes Humbert much grief as he tours America with Lolita by his side.
