Since the beginning of time man has been obsessed with science. In man’s quest for understanding and improvement, science has aided in the destruction of life. This is evident in the short story “The Birthmark” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. In the short story, Aylmer is a symbol of man’s desire for perfection. Aylmer, a man of science, becomes obsessed with his wife’s birthmark that according to him was an imperfection. He sees the “crimson hand” upon his wife’s face to clash with her beauty.
