Lord of the Flies Essay
In this paper I have chosen to explore the symbolism and meaning of fire in Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. The author uses fire frequently to illustrate the hope of rescue, security in the form of a gathering place for the boys, comfort and heat. It is also used to represent civilization, power and as a symbol of the life of evil in the sick world on this deserted island. Rescue Fire as the representation of hope is illustrated on Pg 37 paragraph 3 “We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make some smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire, a fire, make a fire” Also in the last chapter fire is use as a symbol of the end and of rescue on pg 197 “Then maybe a ship will notice the smoke and come and rescue us and take us home.” The author further uses fire as a symbol of hope and rescue.
