In the course of his actions, Henry evolves into one of the most interesting authority figures in Shakespeare. In Henry IV, he grapples with how he should live his life, the royal way or in the manner of Falstaff. Henry V shows us the continuing development of Henry, as he assumes the throne and makes war on France. But which Henry is the “real” Henry? ... At the end of Henry IV, King Henry says to Falstaff, “ I know thee not, old man. ... Henry banishes Falstaff, and also apparently turns away from living that kind of life. ... We see glimpses of Falstaff via Harry throughout Henry V, the most shining example coming with his wooing of Catherine. The entire play, Henry comes across as an individual who will do anything for his country. When facing one of his former comrades, he has the man hanged. Henry does care about the common man, but not to the point of giving up to “protect” them.
