Mudlavia by Elizabeth Stuckey-French is an amazing short story about a young boy named Matthew who travels with his mother to Mudlavia: a famous home for health and rest where there is said to be mud that can cure all ails. ... Instead of telling other curious patients at Mudlavia the truth about their life, they fabricate stories of a perfect fairy tale, a fantasy that one dreams about at night. ...
Throughout Matthew and his mother’s stay at Mudlavia, they talked about living a fairy tale life to other patients. ... During the protagonist’s stay at Mudlavia, he got hurt once again by deceiving himself, convincing himself that the mud treatments he was forced to undergo, were actually helping his knee. ... Elizabeth Stuckley-French’s short story, Mudlavia, is a prime example of how lying can create horrible things to occur, things that no parent wants their child to have to experience such as the loss of reality and getting hurt in the process. Matthew, the protagonist, never seemed to learn the lesson since, during his entire stay at Mudlavia, he spent his time creating fantasies about a life that he did not live and the result of his deceiving others was that Matthew became wounded emotionally and physically.
