king david kalakaua

Over Throw King David La’amea Kalakaua ruled from 1874 to 1891. In 1890 the McKinley Tariff began to cause a depression in the islands, because of it’s taxing on sugar. Changes in the tariff policy of the U.S got rid of the advantages for Hawai’i that it had under the Reciprocity Treaty. The depression supported the aspiration among many business men for annexation to the U.S. In 1891 King David Kalakaua traveled to San Francisco and fell ill there and died. He had no children, so Lili’uokalani became his successor. The cabinet insisted that she take the oath of office and promise to uphold the constitution of 1887. Lili’u married John Dominis and lived with him and his widowed mother at Washington’s Place. Queen Lili’u wanted to rewrite the constitution so that it would restore power to the monarch. When she became queen she appointed cabinet members who supported her view from the National Reform Party. As soon as the legislative saw them they were voted out.
