1940’s Office Early 20th century a large number of people were added to the pool of clerks, a large percentage of these were women caused the lowering of the status of the clerk position within the office work environment. ... By the 1940’s two major developments in the layout and design of the office emerged which greatly affected these working conditions. The ‘landscaped’ office and the ability to ‘personalize’ the office space emerged as concepts to create a friendly work environment that reduced hierarchical divisions between clerks and executives. It was characterised by furniture of a high quality and carpeting that resembled a domestic space throughout the entire office not just in the executive offices.
