Barrabas

The purpose behind Par Lagerkvist's book Barabbas, is to show a mans struggle to believe in God and to find love. It is shown in such a way from the characters perspective that you wonder should he really believe? The book starts when Barabbas becomes "Barabbas the Acquitter" and ends with "Barabbas the Martyr". The struggle in between is shown through his relationship with four others, and the effects those people have on him. Perhaps the purpose of this book is to help those that feel lost or unloved to be saved by God, to understand that even Barabbas the man acquitted and freed instead of Jesus was worthy and they are too. The first relationship you encounter in the book is between Barabbas and a fat prostitute. This is where he starts out living right after he is released. Her take on his odd behavior and silence is that he is dead on the inside because he has been already prepared to die but then didn't.
